Job Summary: 

Estrella Mountain Community College is hiring several Biology Student Learning Facilitator I positions to work under the Learning College Philosophy where learning happens anyway, anytime, anyplace. This position provides academic support, including in-class peer tutoring, for BIO156, 181, 201, and closely related subjects in the Academic Success Center.

Essential Functions: 
  • 80% Supports students in assigned section(s) by attending class and conducting in-class tutoring based on direction from faculty/instructor; conducts drop-in tutoring hours, workshops/review sessions, group tutoring sessions, and/or tutoring appointments in the Academic Success Center; works with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.

  • 10% Provides student status and recommendations to the Learning Technician, Sr.; meets with faculty to stay current with academic content requirements and follow-up on struggling students; assists with course discussion boards, class presentations and other student success activities.

  • 5% Prepares for workshops/review sessions; meets with Learning Technician, Sr. to upgrade skills; attends staff meetings.

  • 5% Maintains accurate records on activities; performs outreach to engage students in tutoring, review sessions. 

Minimum Qualifications: 
  1. Successful completion (grade of "A" OR grade of “B” with instructor recommendation) in BIO156 or BIO181 or BIO201.

  2. Knowledge of instructional methods used at Estrella Mountain Community College to teach Biology.

  3. Good communication skills and the ability to help students understand complex material.

  4. Patient and respectful of varying levels of student content knowledge.

  5. Available access to high-speed internet and technological tools used to perform online tutoring which may include, but not limited to, a computer, webcam, microphone, headset, whiteboard and dry-erase markers.

Desired Qualifications: 
  1. Successful completion (grade of "A" OR grade of “B” with instructor recommendation) in BIO 201. Strongly prefer applicants who have completed BIO202 and BIO205.

  2. Previous tutoring experience.

  3. Willingness to facilitate review sessions, make presentations.

  4. Experience providing quality service in a fast-paced environment.
